Kongernes Jelling – besøgscenter. Udvidelse 2011-14 - Jelling

Siden det oprindelige formidlingscenter blev taget i brug i år 2000, har opsigtsvækkende arkæologiske fund afsløret at historien om Jelling i den sene vikingetid er meget større end hidtil påvist. Omridset at et monumentalt anlæg er blevet afdækket, et stormandsanlæg fra vikingetiden.

Det eksisterende formidlingscenter skal om- og udbygges, så det også kan rumme formidlingen af stormandsanlægget og den nye læsning af Jelling og Jellings betydning internationalt. Indgangen flyttes til den nye forplads, modsat den nuværende indgang. Der etableres en tagterrasse, hvorfra der er overblik over området, og bygningens sydlige blok forlænges, så der dannes større udstillingsareal. Faciliteter for besøgende forbedres: Butikken udvides og der skabes større og bedre café-forhold. Første etape af udbygningen afsluttes i 2014.

Kongernes Jelling – Site Museum. Extension 2011-14 - Jelling, Denmark

Since the original site museum was inaugurated in 2000, dramatic archaeological finds have disclosed that the history of Jelling in late Viking age is far larger than hitherto established. The outline of a monumental structure has been discovered, resembling a Viking Age manor.

The existing site museum is to be converted and extended so it can accommodate the communication of the structure and the new understanding of Jelling and Jelling’s international importance. The entrance will be moved to the new front courtyard, opposite the present entrance. A roof terrace will provide an overview of the area, and the building’s southern part will be extended to increase exhibition areas. Visitors’ facilities will be improved: The museum shop will be enlarged and café will be made bigger and better. First phase of the extension is finalized in 2014.
